This tutor-led Scottish Certificate for Personal Licence Holders (SCPLH Level 6) course is designed for anyone who wants to sell or authorise the sale of alcohol in Scotland.

It is a legal requirement to complete this qualification before applying for a Personal Licence through your local authority.

Delivered in a classroom setting, this one-day course provides expert guidance, structured learning and the official exam, making it ideal for learners who prefer face-to-face training and support.

How the course works

This is a one-day classroom course, typically running from 9:00am to around 4:30pm (exact timings will be confirmed in your joining instructions).

Once your booking is confirmed:

• Full joining instructions will be sent by email
• Your course handbook will be sent by post
• You will attend a tutor-led session covering all required topics
• You will complete the official SCPLH exam at the end of the course

What You Will Learn

This course covers all legal and practical knowledge required to work within licensed premises in Scotland.

• Unauthorised and temporary licensable activities

• The Personal Licence application process

• Rights of entry to licensed premises

• Police powers relating to suspension and closure

• Prohibitions on the sale of alcohol

• Alcohol strength and its effects on the body

• Protection of children from harm

• The premises licence

• Operating plans and their purpose

• The role of the Designated Premises Manager

Exam information

The SCPLH exam is a multiple-choice assessment consisting of:

• 40 questions

• Pass mark: 28 correct answers

The exam is completed at the end of the course under supervised conditions.

Certification

Upon successful completion, you will receive a Scottish Certificate for Personal Licence Holders (SCPLH) issued by:

• BIIAB (British Institute of Innkeeping Awarding Body)

or

• Highfield Qualifications

This certificate must be refreshed every 5 years.

It is the first stage required before applying for your Personal Licence in Scotland.

After passing your exam, you will need to apply for your Personal Licence through your local authority.
