Personal Licence for England and Wales

If you want to legally sell or authorise the sale of alcohol in England or Wales, you must hold a Personal Licence.

The process is straightforward and can be completed in three steps.

Step 1 – Complete the Training

You must take the Level 2 Award for Personal Licence Holders (APLH) course and pass the exam. This is a legal requirement for anyone applying for a Personal Licence.

Step 2 – Receive Your Certificate

Once you pass the exam, you will receive your APLH certificate, which is required when submitting your licence application.

Step 3 – Apply to Your Local Council

You can then apply for your Personal Licence through your local council, submitting your certificate, a DBS check and the required application documents.

Once approved, you can legally authorise the sale of alcohol and may be named as the Designated Premises Supervisor (DPS) on a licensed premises.
